What is Biochar?

Biochar is a highly porous carbon that improves nutrient adsorption and provides a practically permanent home for beneficial soil biology. For gardening, proper biochar use will boost yields and increase the effectiveness of your grow!

For composting facilities, biochar can help control odors and stabilize nutrients.

Biochar is made through a process called pyrolysis, utilizing organic matter as a feed stock. After years of working with various grades of biochar, we now utilize the highest quality biochar available!

Our biochar is locally sourced from softwood tree remnants, a byproduct of the milling process.

  • Under a microscope, biochar looks like a compact series of tubes that just keep going. This structure is the key building block allowing biochar to hold many times its weight in water. Biochar’s cation exchange capacity allows it to hold nutrients in the soil, instead of them being washed away. Adding biochar into soil also puts carbon permanently in the ground as a carbon sink, so it’s actually CARBON NEGATIVE!

  • Simply put, you’re going to have a healthier and more vibrant garden when properly using biochar. You’ll get year-after-year benefits from this lifetime soil amendment.

    Raw Biochar

Raw* biochar can be used in many different ways, from amending compost piles, maximizing your plant’s growth, and even for cleaning up hazardous waste.

Raw biochar is available! We recommend blending pure/raw biochar with other ingredients (like compost and fertilizer) and charging for 3-4 weeks before using. Raw biochar is NOT meant to go straight in the garden, but can be field applied in farming applications. (You can put our Biochar Blend straight into the garden. It’s already blended and charged!) Raw biochar is available for wholesale purchasing in 1 cu. ft. bags and 60 cu. ft. super sacks, as well as traditional bulk.

Our Fuhgeddaboudit! Root Zone Feeder Packs are also a biochar-based product. Plants love them! Take a look at this pack we pulled out of a pepper pot at the end of the year. The roots are all concentrated around it, in a great place to take advantage of nutrients and beneficial soil biology associated with biochar.

*Skipping the inoculation step reduces effectiveness the 1st year, as biochar will absorb nutrients and minerals from the surrounding soil, reducing plant-available nutrients in the soil solution. Work with a pre-inoculated Biochar Blend for best results. However, in some landscape situations, blending pure biochar into soil has advantages that outweigh this limitation.
