If you find yourself getting just a bit confused about how to fertilize your organic garden, you’re in the right place. Container plants, veggie gardens, and annual flowers all need food and there are different fertilizers and applications for each.
We’re nearing the last chance to fertilize many summer edibles before your last harvest, or your annual flowers for a fresh flush of blooms before the fall. Don’t miss this chance!
Here are some of our favorite Organic Mechanics fertilizers, and what they’ll do for you and your garden — because if you’ve got a need, we’ve got the fertilizer!
The “I want to fertilize and be done with it” fertilizer:
We hear you. You don’t want to get into all the fussy mixing, measuring, and planning a fertilizing schedule. You’ve got better things to do with your time (like buy more plants). If this is you, grab some bags of Organic Mechanics® Fuhgeddaboutit! Root Zone Feeder Packs — it works for all types of plants, and you simply add it into your potting soil or bedding soil at planting time. One and done.
The “I have lots of plants and they all need fertilizing right now” fertilizer:
You’re the gardener’s gardener; you like all the things. Flowers, houseplants, veggies, trees, native plants, bulbs — you name it, you’ve got it. We’re like you, too, which is why we developed Organic Mechanics® 3-2-2 Insect Frass Fertilizer. Add it to your soil or potting soil, or use it as a liquid foliar spray, and your plants (every single one of them) will thank you. P.S. Insect Frass is insect poop, so it’s totally vegan and will not harm any beneficial insects in your garden. Let’s hear it for the frass!
The “I love veggies” fertilizer:
Lots of gardeners are passionate about veggies, and if this is you, we’ve got you covered. Suståne 4-6-4 All Natural Flower & Vegetable Plant Food is ideal all of your veggies and flowers — because really, who doesn’t also like flowers?
The “What about my lawn and trees?” fertilizer:

You’ll want to load up on Suståne 8-2-4 All Natural Lawn & Landscape Plant Food. It provides long-lasting food through a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer — just enough at just the right time.
Fertilizing Tips
While you’ll want to do a little research if you have a more specific fertilizing question, here’s some general guidelines for the when’s and the how’s of feeding your plants.
- If your summer plants are looking a bit bedraggled and it’s time to give them a little haircut, consider giving them some added nutrition to rejuvenate them.
- Container plants are notoriously heavy feeders — they can’t absorb nutrients from the surrounding soil, so they depend upon you to give them what they need. Make sure you stay on top of their nutrition needs with adequate and regular feeding!
- And speaking of container plants, they tend to dry out fairly quickly, don’t they? Add some Organic Mechanics® Worm Castings to hold in moisture and nutrients.
